The unprecedented, collaborative effort by Atlanta's business, entertainment, press and charity communities hopes to raise $1 million to assist in the long-term support efforts for the victims of the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Pennsylvania tragedies during the upcoming day-long fund-raiser and rally. There will also be special activities for children. "We made a conscious effort to highlight the musical talent right here in Georgia and the Southeast. All of these artists were gracious enough to perform in "Atlanta Unites" at such a short notice, understood that this was an all-volunteer effort and waived their usual performance fees," said Brian Hill, assistant general manager, Centennial Olympic Park. "Our goal is to raise $1 million and if everyone who comes to take part in "Atlanta Unites" and donates a quarter, we can reach this goal and help our fellow American who were affected by the horrific events that has touched us all." All money raised will be donated to United Way, American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. "Atlanta Unites" is a free event and an all-volunteer effort. All products, materials and services used during the event, including entertainment are donated. Another unprecedented effort is the "unified" broadcast of a portion "Atlanta Unites." A portion of "Atlanta Unites" will be telecast on all of the Atlanta television stations - WSB-TV, WXIA-TV, WGNX-TV, WAGA-TV, WGCL-TV, and GPTV from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. There will also be a day-long phone marathon for people to call in donations at GPTV. Dignitaries scheduled to take part in "Atlanta Unites" include Governor Roy Barnes, former U.S. Ambassador, Andrew Young and U.S. Senator Max Cleland. Hosting huge events at the park is not something new for officials. This summer's concert series drew crowds in excess of 90,000. "We are asking visitors not to bring any coolers, backpacks or large bags," said Park Manager Mark Banta. "They will not be permitted into the park for this event and smaller bags will be subject to inspection." Families are welcome to bring blankets and chairs so they can enjoy what is expected to be a beautiful and moving, day.
